External render protects the outside of a property while also giving tired or damaged walls a cleaner, more consistent appearance.

I undertake external rendering for complete elevations, individual walls and smaller repair work, using different render systems depending on the existing background, exposure and finish required. Proper preparation is just as important as the render itself, so the condition of the existing wall is assessed before deciding on the most suitable approach.

Choosing the Right Render System

There is no single render system that suits every property.

The existing masonry, condition of the wall, level of exposure and appearance required all need to be considered. In some situations a traditional sand and cement render is appropriate, while modern thin-coat systems can provide a more flexible and highly weather-resistant alternative.

The aim is to choose a system that works with the building rather than simply applying the same specification everywhere.

Modern render systems

Modern render systems provide a durable decorative finish with greater flexibility than conventional sand and cement render.

I work with SAS Render Systems and I am an SAS approved applicator, allowing me to offer modern render systems designed for good weather resistance and a consistent finished appearance.

Modern systems can be particularly useful when renovating existing rendered properties or where a modern coloured finish is preferred.

Render Repairs & Patching

Not every damaged elevation needs to be completely re-rendered.

I undertake localised render repairs including cracked or loose areas, damaged corners, patches around previous building work and sections where existing render has failed.

Where possible, repairs are prepared and finished to blend with the surrounding render, although differences in age, texture and weathering can mean an exact colour match is not always possible.

Preparation & Reinforcement

A good render finish depends heavily on what happens before the final coat is applied.

Loose or defective material needs to be removed, backgrounds prepared correctly and problem areas dealt with before rendering begins. Depending on the system and condition of the wall, this may include bonding coats, reinforcement mesh, beads or additional preparation around cracks and changes in background.

Taking time over this stage helps reduce the risk of cracking and premature failure later.

Existing & Older Rendered Properties

Older properties can require a little more consideration before new render is applied.

Existing render may have failed because of movement, poor preparation, trapped moisture or previous repairs using incompatible materials. Where necessary, I will assess the existing surface before recommending whether local repair, removal and replacement, or a different render system is the better option.

For properties where breathability is particularly important, a lime-based system may be more appropriate.

A Professional External Finish

Whether you have a small damaged area, a cracked elevation or a property requiring complete re-rendering, get in touch with KDH Plastering & Property Care.

Photos of the existing walls are often a useful starting point, but larger rendering work will normally require a site visit so the condition of the background can be properly assessed.

External rendering, thin-coat systems and render repairs across Cornwall and the Plymouth area.

External rendering is a significant part of the appearance and weather protection of a property, so attention to detail matters.

I aim to provide careful preparation, straight edges and beads, consistent finishes and a tidy working area throughout the job. Where scaffolding or access equipment is required, this can be considered as part of planning the work.
